    Authentic Instruction Lesson
    Ashley-
-All of the basic requirements are present! Good Work!
-I read how you thoroughly thought through this lesson and you understand how the activity will work itself out.
-All of the elements of authentic learning are actually present near the end of your lesson.
-This lesson is a good use of technology- You incorporate many websites and outlets for the children to use within this assignment.
-One specific thing you did very well as to use the standard in accordance to your activity. They support each other very nicely.
-A suggestion to make your lesson a bit easier to read would be to format it in a way that broke the lesson into sections. I am sure that the wiki made it that way, but that's what came to my mind first. Also, I would make sure you mention that you as the teacher will show a wiki already done previously just so the students have a visual of what to expect.
Other than that- I would have loved for one of my High School Teachers to be that creative and come up with an activity to spark interest.

Type- 5th Grade Social Studies -
    5.5.13 Understand developments
in foreign policy and domestic policies between the contentNixon and Clinton presidencies.
    e. Describe the growing impact
of your page here.the media on public opinion.
I will have the students in six groups. Each group will have one President (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, or Clinton). From here I will have the students use http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/ to find major information about the President they have been assigned, also links from those pages will be acceptable. The students will research individually and then come together as a group to compare what they have discovered. After the students have grasped a general knowledge about the President, they will then be asked to decide as a group upon one foreign/domestic policy that partook in. After this, the students would look up ways that the news portrayed the policy. This research can be done on http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php? pid=4767. The students would then evaluate how they would respond to the policy based upon how the news outlets had described the policy. The media outlets would range from newspapers, radio broadcasts, to news casts that cover the policy. After this, the students would then create a WikiSpace that would show the policy a brief summary of the policy, the slants that media created, and a reflection from each student stating their personal opinion of the policy and why they think the people did or did not support the policy. From there, the rest of the groups can then observe the rest of the group’s policy by viewing the WikiSpace on a television connected to a computer. I will point out how there are more media sources for President Clinton than Nixon because of society’s increased dependence on media.
It would be necessary to have in depth instruction of creating a WikiSpace. If there is a technology lab in the school, this could be a lesson where the general education teacher and technology teacher collaborate. Also I would want to have a time to show the students around the White House website and show them how to conduct a proper search online.
Computers with internet access are needed for this activity. Also a large television connected to a computer for easier class viewing is needed.
Learner Autonomy will be satisfied because the students are working collaboratively in groups with the teacher only providing guidelines. The students will learn about the policies and media impact by actually being exposed to the media and then being asked to produce an opinion about the policy. This activity is complex and challenging. It incorporates real world situations so that students are exposed to information and must then formulate opinions about the material. This also relates to holistic activities.
